Time to Rhyme! Or Not--Fun with Poetry

During April we celebrated National Poetry Month--& poetry about libraries during National Library Week. Check out some of our local poets!
Many wrote acrostic poems—You use the letters in your name or something you like to do, or the letters in ‘library’—or any word:
Liberty
Ice cream
Book
Read
Active
Reread
Yay!

Lucky
In Cedar Lake
Because the library is
Amazing. You can
Read The Hunger Games
Yet it is never open too late

Super awesome
Work hard
In the water
Makes me feel amazing

Joyful
Always reading
Can do algebra
Excited
You can always find me doing something creative.

Jam and toast
Everyone’s friend
Rabbids is my favorite game!
Extra joyful
Makes up jokes
Yoyo doer

Riddle Poetry—we solved different riddle poems all month long. They were from the book, Guess Again! Riddle Poems by Lillian Morrison. Here is one for National Library Week:
“Easy to open, no need to unlock it.
Sometimes it’s small enough to carry in your pocket.
But when it is open it can carry you
Through fascinating spaces like a far-flying rocket.!

It is a    _____   _____   _____   _____  (See the answer at the end of this post!)

24 Hour Poem—for this poem you write down what you did each hour during a 24 hour period. Here is one composition:
I sleep all day.
I sleep all night
I sleep at sunrise
I sleep on a rainy day.
I sleep in Mexico
I sleep everywhere.
I waaaaaake up.
I am hurrying up to go to school!
I work at MacDonald’s and
I work at an office.
I love to work.
I work so hard
I eat breakfast.
I work,
Work,
Work,
Work,
Work.
I wait for the bus
I relax.
While I relax I read.
I talk a lot and laugh too.
Now I fall asleep.
I like to sleep.

Some made poems from letters and words cut from old magazines:

Try some of these fun types of poetry. Talk about them with your older child and provide materials. Have fun working together, too!
You and your preschooler or toddler can work together. For example you might write an acrostic poem featuring the letters in your child’s name. Get out some old magazines and use pictures and letters to create unique poetry. Activities like these—that involve writing (& cutting, gluing and coloring), rhyming, singing, and talking—all teach your child essential early literacy skills. So have fun together—you are helping your child get ready to learn to read!!

Summer Reading is Here!

Summer Reading has gotten started with a roaring rush of craziness! We thought we'd share a few pictures of what's happened so far.

Our Tuesday Preschool programs got us off to a great start. We did a storytime about seeds and plants. Instead of our usual craft, we made an edible garden, planting jellybean seeds in dirt pudding and growing some butter cookie flowers! Delicious!

Our second week with the preschoolers featured stories about machines that dig and move dirt, such as backhoes and bulldozers. The children made their own construction scene after we watched the film version of I stink! by Kate & Jim McMullan, which brought lots of giggles!

In spite of the nasty storms that were forecasted for last Wednesday, children had a good time at our Dig Into Reading Fair. We had crafts and games throughout the library, including an opportunity to have pictures taken as a dinosaur! The very talented Miss Melissa (seen above) created our dino picture cutout. She also painted our Pin the Tail on Tyrannosaurus Rex game. Thanks, Melissa!

This week the preschoolers had stories about worms and snakes and made their own twirly snake.

And, as always, we've had activities and crafts available in the children's area. Children seem to enjoy doing those while they're waiting for their programs or just sitting and enjoying that great atmosphere of the library!

And I can't forget... our volunteers are always hugely important for making Summer Reading work! So if you see one of the teens doing a great job at a program or at the prize table, please let them know that they're appreciated!

Coming up: CLIFFORD! The big red dog is coming to visit us TODAY! We're having a little birthday celebration because he's 50!!! Come at 2:00 for a chance to take a picture with Clifford and join in the rest of the birthday fun!

It's Hard to Believe

It doesn't quite seem possible that the school year is almost over, does it? Today, I'm going to give you a slideshow recap of what the children have been doing at the library. It's been fun!

Great Artists

This month, our Saturday Craft Program was inspired by some of the great artists. We used artwork by Wassily Kadinksy, Jasper Johns, Henri Matisse, and Georges Seurat as our inspirations.

The children were given an example of the artwork, supplies and set loose to create their own masterpieces. At one point a child was heard asking, "That one was so much fun! Can I make another one?" Music to this librarian's ears!

Each child had his or her own take on the art and they all came out fabulously!

Mardi Gras Fun!

Our Saturday family crafting program this month was a Mardi Gras/Carnivale party... done on a very family friendly level!

Children created masks, made crowns, and  decorated king's cupcakes. Everyone got Mardi Gras beads, too. We had our biggest Saturday craft program yet and had so much fun!

Upcoming Programs:

Thursday, February 14 at 10:30am: Toddler Time for children ages 2-3 years old and a  caregiver.

Friday, February 15 at 10:30 or 11:30am: Mother Goose on the Loose for children from birth to 35 months and a caregiver. (Yes, it's the same week as Toddler Time. Unfortunately, the month started on a Friday, so it's a bit confusing!)

All I Want for Christmas...

On Saturday, we're making a few simple Christmas presents at the library!

We'll be making paper bag photo albums, picture frames, and one or two other crafts that would work nicely as gifts, or to keep for yourself.

It's a cute little album with LOTS of space for photos. All materials will be provided. You just need to supply the pictures and a little creativity. Children should bring 10-15 pictures - no priceless treasures, though!

If you like, you can make the book at the library and add pictures at home, too.

Join us on Saturday, December 1 from 10am to 12 noon for some Holiday Gift Crafting Fun!
